Autumn Lighthouse Tours- Climb the 48 foot tall Muskegon South Pierhead Light and experience the unique feeling of traveling back in time. Up two spiral staircases and a shipman’s ladder, this ironclad tower built in 1903 boasts unparalleled views from the lantern room at the tower top. Knowledgable, passionate volunteer Lighthouse keeper docents share the history of Muskegon’s lighthouses and other faces of the area’s maritime importance. Pre-sunset tours are offered all autumn long, with hours that vary in September and October. Our final tour is held on Halloween, when volunteers dress up in costume and Trick-or-Treating is offered at the lighthouse tower base. Kids in costume will climb for free on Halloween (in the company of an adult), and regular admission for the autumn tower tours is only $4 for adults and $2 for children 11 and under. Military and veteran admission is $3, and kids must be 3 foot tall in order to climb. Sturdy shoes are recommended, and no reservations are necessary. First come, first-served. The tour lasts about 15 minutes if there is no wait upon your arrival. Parking is available at the beach or alongside Margaret Drake Elliot Park. Walk between the NOAA and USCG stations on the public visitor walkway to gain access to the pier. The last tour is offered 15 minutes prior to closing. Climb a Michigan maritime castle as you help preserve our area lighthouses! Memberships and private tours are available by emailing or by calling 844-MLIGHTS.
